41 TIPS ON MARKETING A PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

BY

HENRY H. GOLDMAN, Ph.D.   Executive Managing Partner,

RISK Management Associates, International, LLP

An example of the first three tips:

1.      MAINTAIN CONSTANT MARKETING AND CONSTANT NETWORKING

Most consultants hate the idea of selling and complain about feast or famine.  Try to reduce your selling and fend off famine by better constant marketing and networking to generate a stream of new warm leads and prospects, even when you are busy.

2.      MARKETING IS NOT JUST PROMOTION – TRY RESEARCH INSTEAD

Remember, promotion is just part of the marketing mix.  Since marketing is about satisfying clients’ needs, why not put some of your constant marketing effort into an ongoing program of research?  Ask your clients, competitors and even suppliers about how they see their businesses over the next year and try to understand their future needs.

3.      ACQUIRE GOOD DAILY MARKETING HABITS

Make your marketing and selling easier by making effort habitual and automatic, i.e., every day I will communicate with one old contact and ask for a referral or a testimonial.  Make two lists: “Ten things that I will do every week,” and “Ten things that I will do every month.”  Line out the bad habits that steal your time and stop you from marketing and promoting yourself more.  Take positive steps to eliminate them.  Procrastination is a common problem and a bad habit.
